Automotive Braking Systems Updates - Led by GM, ZF Group, Cummins, Stellantis, JLR & more

Automotive IQ | 04/25/2025

According to Precedence Research, the US braking system market is set to exceed USD 92.97 billion in the next decade. Staying up to date with the latest braking trends and innovations is crucial for car manufacturers to maintain competitive and maximize market share.

Euro 7 is a new emissions standard, and the Euro 7 regulation sets requirements for the type-approval of vehicles, brake systems, and tires intended for sale in the European Union. It is the strictest standard yet and, for the first time, addresses non-exhaust emissions such as pollutants from vehicle brakes and tires, aiming to improve overall air quality since electric vehicles (EVs) do not produce tailpipe emissions.

Automotive IQ recently interviewed Ishmaeel Ghouri, Lead Engineer at JLR, who stated that the top three priorities OEMs should be focusing on is:

1) Developing greener and low emission friction materials
2) Improving the regenerative braking system capability to make it more efficient
3) Exploring new innovations to modify the existing brake system.

The Euro 7 regulation has placed significant focus on the automotive industry to seek alternative solutions and innovations for braking systems, and brings sustainability and environmental issues to the forefront.

Ishmaeel's key takeaway is that:

The Euro 7 regulation has profoundly transformed our understanding of brake emissions. A decade ago, there was a significant lack of research on the health impacts of these emissions. Today, nearly every OEM and Tier 1 supplier has either implemented or is developing brake dynamometers capable of measuring emissions. This shift marks a significant advancement in the research and management of brake emissions, highlighting the critical role Euro 7 plays in driving industry progress and enhancing public health awareness.

Continue the conversation with Ishmaeel, in-person, at the 9th Annual Automotive Chassis Systems USA (June 10-12, Ann Arbor), where he will be running an exclusive session to help the audience fully understand exact/specific components for Euro 7 regulations and plans/timelines for introducing new legislation.

The dedicated braking systems track will bring together OEMs, Tier-1s & Tier-2s for expert-led presentations, addressing key challenges and providing actionable insights to advance your braking system development. Check out some key topics and companies presenting below:

  • Examine OEM deployment plans for novel Brake-by-Wire technology - General Motors
  • Fully understand specific components for Euro 7 regulations and plans/timelines for introducing new legislation - JLR
  • Discuss real-world technical solutions implemented by companies to lower tailpipe emissions - Thyssenkrupp
  • Future brake development for Software-Defined Vehicles - Cummins
